I do like Spider-Man. Or I used to, at least... I haven't read the newer comics, and although I liked the earlier trilogy, I've been less than impressed with the new flicks (or the first one, at least - haven't seen the latest one). As the character, though, I do like him. For a flagship character for a comic line, I think he's better than Superman. Spider-Man has flaws and isn't perfect. Superman has too many powers for my tastes - almost like the "Mary Sue" of comicdom.

I respectfully disagree. I didn't enjoy the Amazing Spider-Man, because I couldn't really connect with the character. There wasn't any of the fun or whimsy of the first trilogy. I had read that they had decided to make this more of an action-oriented take on the Spider-Man story, but in my opinion, it made the characters flat and unmemorable as a result.

It also didn't help that they ruined one of my favorite Spidey villains. The Lizard is supposed to be a barely-sentient creature, not some megalomaniacal monster. At least they got Doctor Octopus right the first time around... altogether, I thought the original trilogy stayed truer to the comics than this reboot (although I admit that I haven't seen the second film yet...).

Superman does seem too powerful, but that is occasionally the beauty of it. Read the graphic novel "All-Star Superman" sometime, and you may change your mind. Fantastic book.

I see on the occasional list that Batman is more popular than Superman, and I think that Superman's powers and backstory are a big part of that. Superman is an alien, which supposedly explains his powers. But Batman is just an ordinary guy with a ton of money, a scary suit and "all those wonderful toys." In some respects, Batman could be any of us, given the right circumstances and proper training. We can never be aliens from another planet, so that dream is unrealistic and unobtainable.

I think that this is the strength of Marvel's characters, too. With a few exceptions, the mainstream heroes are normal humans who have been thrust into extraordinary circumstances (e.g. bitten by a radioactive spider, doused with gamma radiation, guy talented with electromagnets builds an extreme pacemaker...). By their very nature, it's easier for us to relate to these characters because their origins are things we can relate to as well. Most of us have been that geeky high school or college student. We've been those shunned "freaks" because we like or think or look something different from the norm. And I would imagine that most of us are driven by a desire to do something right or heroic, just to help our fellow humans. I don't think any of us have been kicked off our home planet because it was about to explode. Speaking of which....

I would love to! It's been one of my longest dreams to be able to fly through space, exploring distant galaxies and nebulas, discovering new planets, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go... well, you get the idea. This might be a matter of dueling nostalgias, but if you like Starflight, I highly recommend Star Control 2. One of my all time favorite games. Not so trade-y, but big on exploration and open world play.
Star Control is the reason I gave Starflight a try.

I've heard great things about Star Control 2, and I may have to download it. Now to find the time to play it!

Treasure Adventure game is the Metroidvania you never hear of. It defies the "you get what you pay for" statement. You can get it for free off of GoG. It's stunningly large, fun, and requires thinking rather than twitch reflexes.

I saw the newest one Friday and it's just as good as the first one with lots of new awesome dragons.
