Decided to take a break of other stuff and watch a few repeats of Buffy.

<3 this show. There's just no way anything else can take the place of #1 show for me.

The Shield - just getting into Season 5. I'm really enjoying this show. Not quite as good as The Wire, but it's really hard to compare the two... aside from both being gritty cop shows, they have completely different flavors... The Wire is more about the characters while The Shield is more action oriented and is a much more accessible show. They're both top notch.

Sounds like I really, really need to check out The Wire and really, really need to avoid The Shield.

You need to check out both. Yeah, The Shield is a little closer to a CSI/L&O type of case-of-the-week show, but it's VERY good, and really takes the time to flesh out its characters. It does have that "case of the week" element like CSI etc., but there's also long story arcs, and further on in the series the long arcs are more of the focus, while you still usually have a "case of the week" going on at the same time. Honestly, I was skeptical when I started the show, and I almost didn't continue after the first episode (the main character is a dirty cop, and in episode one he does one of the worst things he's done in the series). But it's definitely worth sticking with, and I'd highly recommend it.

The Wire is more like a novel with each episode being a chapter... there is no case-of-the-week format, instead there's one big case that lasts an entire season. The guy who created the show was a journalist in Baltimore who worked with a lot of homicide detectives, and many of the events and characters are based on things that actually happened. During the first season, the focus is on a group of detectives and a group of drug dealers, but by the end of the series it features a HUGE range of characters, from the (fictional) mayor of Baltimore to a homeless junkie (Bubbles, one of my favorite characters), and every single one of them is well developed. It's not as easy as The Shield to follow; the writers don't dumb it down at all, there's only one flashback in the entire series that happens in the first episode, and you have to pay close attention to the dialogue and characters. It also takes about 3 or 4 episodes to really get used to the flavor; it seems kind of dry at first. But if you stick with it, it's an amazing experience.

I should also mention that both shows are pretty gritty content-wise. The Shield has a lot of cursing and violence, although I haven't noticed any f-bombs. You might also have the occasional bare butt during a strip club raid or sex scene. The Wire is full of f-bombs, and has occasional nudity; also, there are a couple of gay characters who are on occasion seen making out with their partners. It's not often, but it's there, and it may be a turn off to some.
