Nice. I've actually been slumming around with a corncob pipe XD However, like you said, standard stuff does the job. Plus, it didn't require any break-in time. I'm looking to invest in a decent one, though. Something with a long stem, too. The long stems supposedly allow the smoke to cool by the time it hits your mouth, though at this time of year in Michigan, cool doesn't necessarily sound attractive :P

Yeah, vanilla jives veeeerry nicely with pipe tobacco. I don't know much about cigars, but vanilla is typically a good bet for a smooth smoke, provided it isn't SUPER cheap. I've also had luck with black cherry, though that was for something new and probably not my go-to.

The difference between my dad and I is that he prefers darker stuff. Like, his cigars are the deepest, darkest, harshest things ever. I mean, he's been at it for ~30 or 35 years (he's a little over 50 now), but... yeah. Haha. He doesn't mind lighter stuff, especially smoother blends for a pipe, but he and I usually don't share goods XD

Oh yeah, and to be on-topic, what are your thoughts on the new Godzilla trailer, featuring Bryan Cranston?

I don't mind the warmth from a cigar or pipe, but I guess a connoisseur will say how it keeps it from appreciating the flavor or something. Maybe I'll get there at some point.

And yes, I looked it up and saw it after you mentioned it (but forgot entirely who asked, so I was scrambling around on fb and here to see who did). That looks pretty cool. I love the first part with the air jump, a very Dantesque fall to hell. Foreboding.

My collection of fingers from the failings of my minions has been relatively low as of late, so we're around 13 right now.

I've recently been consuming a goodly amount of merlot, as I've come upon a good amount of chocolate and my family's been having various red meats.

Heck, I'll have it by itself as a treat.

Thoughts on it?

I'd drink to that.

Oh man, a Merlot or a Pinot Noir with a nice steak, cooked rare... Oh man. It's food art.

I've done pairings with meals, cured meats, and cheeses, but I haven't really done chocolate pairings. I've heard it's best done with Ports and other dessert wines, but I've seen people do it with reds and whites. How has it worked for you?

I don't get super specific with food pairings but the merlot-chocolate pairing is preeeeeetty good, if I say so myself.

1tbsp soy
1tbsp Worcestershire
1c honey
3 cloves garlic
1-2 chopped green onions
2oz bourbon or whiskey of choice

You might need to double it if making multiple steaks. Also works wonderfully with chicken.

Mix it aaallll up.

Let that bad boy marinate for hours and you have heaven. The alcohol doubles as a tenderizer!

ALTERNATIVELY,

Lose the honey and Worcestershire, add 1tsp ginger and 1c pineapple juice, and replace bourbon with rum of choice--I use with good ol' Captain.

Marinade chicken breasts for a few hours, then grill. When they are almost done, sear pineapple rings next to them on the grill -- it caramelizes the sugars in the fruit.

Lay down a bed of rice. Place chicken on rice. Top with seared pineapple.

You now have Matt's Pineapple Rum Chicken. Accompany with a wine of your choice, or keep it tropical with something refreshing, like a mojito.

Baby.

Yeah whiskey wonderful in a marinade or BBW in general. My pulled pork recipe used to take like a fifth of Jack. Or at least the bottle was always empty when I was done <_<

I might have to get a cheaper whiskey for marinades. I've been getting into Scotch lately and I wouldn't exactly be pouring my Glenmorangie on some chicken. I'm debatable on using my Knob Creek (for C$'s Bourbon marinade).

For your question, I have not. Fishing wasn't one of the activities I caught on with.

How is Gentleman Jack, anyways? It was never high on my list to buy, but some people say it's better, but I'm not really one to trust their whiskey taste.
