Okay, in that case, I would suggest a Mosin Nagant 91/30, which is usually around $80 - 150.

From there, you could replace the stock with a new stock (around $50 - 70).

You'd need a gunsmith to drill for a scope mount, as well as modify the bolt handle to accommodate the mount.

Best thing is, ammunition is about 1/5 of the price you'd pay for any modern rifle cartridge, and is just as potent.

The round is the 7.62 x 54mmR; by comparison the .308 is 7.62 x 51mm, so you shoulkd be fine with power there.

Accuracy...well, the Finn's would pick off Russians at 400 yards during the winter war with iron sights, that's enough for me. I've also seen scoped versions hit 18" targets at 1000.
