Yes, I saw the theatrical version on account of a friend lending me his DVDs. And it was glorious. Plus, it's the first time in 5 years that I've actually seen the Original Trilogy, so it was even better.
Though I must say, it strikes me how unsympathetic Luke is in the beginning. He's whiny, a bit of a brat, and isn't very interesting. There's nothing really that makes him worth sympathizing with until they reach the Death Star.
Also, having Han shoot first (and the only shot at that) makes his character that much more interesting. You get a strong impression that he's an "anything goes so long as I get paid" kind of mercenary, which is exactly what he was supposed to be.
Oh yeah, and John Williams is fantastic.
