Ugh. Stupid, stupid movie. It did the zombie-movie decently, but it was just such a....bad movie. I barely managed to watch the whole thing, and even then I was disappointed with it. "Horror?" Hardly. This was mindless zombie-killing, and I for one do not like that in a movie.

It was awesome.

Star Trek 6 - was good haven't seen it in a while

127 Hours.

Surprisingly a decent movie. And I got to preach to everyone watching about carrying a sharp knife.

Black Swan - It was good. Pretty disturbing, but good. Some genuinely freaky moments and I liked the way they filmed the dance scenes. Good acting too. However the sexual content is such that I won't be buying it on DVD (there's no actual nudity but plenty of suggestion). Also, I thought it was just "good", not "OMG-best-movie-in-years" like some people claim.

Drive Angry - This one does have nudity and a pretty pulpy story. Lots of gruesome images. It entertains but it's nothing special and many Christians will find it unsuitable.

Of the two, despite Drive Angry being much more graphic on the blood&gore department, Black Swan is actually more shocking. But also much better.

I love TCM. So much. Thursdays in June they were doing ye olde Sci-Fi.

The art of movie making died somewhere along the line between then and now.

"The Thing from Another World".

The original 'The Thing'. It really is one of my favorite Sci-Fi movies. Just behind Forbidden Planet. I like it so much I'm nearly halfway interested in seeing the newer one. But I doubt I will. XD The usage of lighting in order to make the monster seem scarier was also a nice touch, as in most monster movies you could clearly see the makeup...but the scene, until the very end, always stays dark when the monster is on screen. It also had a very interesting take on the classic monster. And so satisfying to me, the liberal punk scientist get's what he so clearly deserves.

It felt right. On the inside. You'd understand if you saw the movie.

"It! The Monster from outer space!".

Less of a movie than "The Thing..." but still good. Supposedly, it helped inspire Alien. And I can easily see where that came in. Though I've never seen Alien (And truly believe it would freak me out royally) I know enough about it to see that it took some stuff from this one. 10 people were sent on an exploration to Mars. As soon as they arrive, all communication to earth is shut down. Two months later, a rescue ship arrives to find a single man, a skull with a bullet hole in it, and a wrecked ship. They assume the man went crazy after the ship crashed, and killed his crewmates to make the supplies last longer. He tells an unbelievable story of a mysterious monster wiping out the others, and leaving only him alive to make it to the ship.

And then a mysterious noise on their own earthbound ship leads to a crew member disappearing. Duh duh duh.

So yeah. Fun night.

Nice. XD

Last watched Taken. 'Twas pretty cool. Liam Neeson's voice is right up there with Morgan Freeman's for me. So awesome.

Well, the 1982 version is good, it's the best movie I've seen from John Carpenter (I like it far more than Halloween). But frankly, if you thought The Fly was too disgusting, you're probably not going to like this one either. What I like about The Thing is the suspense, the feeling of not knowing who's infected, the inventive gore/creature effects and the grim, gloomy atmosphere. This isn't one of those 'wink at the audience' horror movies, it has a very raw, negative vibe that I like (comparable to Alien IMO, another favorite of mine).

Did you know there's a third version coming out in a year or something? They better not screw this up.

I'd like to see the version you saw. I don't watch enough classic movies.

Likely, I'ma not see the new one. Too violent, though I still want to see it (and Alien, for that matter) for historical purposes. Just a temptation. I'd also offer the warning that the new one and the old one are incomparable, with wildly different premises. I can recommend it, but if you really like the new one, I'm not sure you'd like the old one. It's a classical monster, rather than a newer infectious one.

Trying to not spoil it. XD

No, not really contention. I'm fine with you not liking it, I don't feel that strongly about that movie anyway. It's just that you said that modern horror movies are all about disgusting violence&gore and that you preferred older horror movies, and I figured that's why you didn't like The Fly, because it's pretty disgusting.

Anyway, whether or not to see The Thing (1982) or Alien, you'll have to decide for yourself, I don't want to make you do anything you don't really want to do (Christians are called to not cause each other to stumble).

The movies are both better than The Fly though (IMHO). Maybe if you like old school film making and not the recent trend of MTV editing and short attention spans, you might like these movies. Especially Alien is kind of a slow burn movie, I believe it takes about an hour before they even show the alien. There's one incredibly gory scene in it (that really shook up theater audiences back then, made them feel on edge for the rest of the movie), for the rest it's not all that bloody. The Thing does have a lot of gore, that might turn you off. Still, it's not all that sadistic like for example the recent remakes of Texas Chainsaw Massacre or Halloween are. Both also have rough language. No sex or nudity (The Thing doesn't even have any female characters).

On the subject of older horror movies, have you seen the French black&white movie Les Diaboliques? It's supposed be a huge classic, I've never seen it for sale or for rent, would really like to see it. Also the old version of The Thing that you mentioned and the old Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

Hmm...I'll have to think it over. I appreciate the explanation, because I was going to look the movies up. XD I'm also not sure I can find anyone to watch them with me. My sister, maybe. It's also not a matter of stumbling as much as it is..."Yep. That memory will show up in my head at 3 AM one night". XD

And...no. No I have not. Internationally wise, my movie knowledge is lacking. Even in B&W. In fact, I've never even heard of Les Diaboliques. Most of the movies I watch come off TCM, a local Satellite channel.

I do remember seeing the old Invasion of the Body Snatchers as a kid though. XD Freaked me out.

Les Diaboliques is streaming on Netflix, but I haven't had a chance to watch it.
