What was the last movie you watched?

It's an ideas movie. The ideas and philosophical themes that 2001 touches upon, are every bit as relevant today as they were when the movie came out. You can pick apart this movie for hours. I found it fun to read essays on what Kubrick wanted to say with this movie, there is an unbelievable and almost unrivaled amount of depth in this movie.

It might be less effective today but that's mostly because audiences have changed, they're not used to such slow movies anymore where you have to figure stuff out for yourselves.

My reason for thinking it less effective is because, while it may be an ideas movie, the ideas are not as fresh. We've hit on them a bit in the last 40 years. The slow presentation has little to do with that.

That said, I'd definitely be interested in reading some of these essays. If you have a few favored ones you could link me to, that'd be appreciated.

Did watch 2001: A Space Odyssey last night. Definitely think that a lot of its effectiveness has been lost in the 40+ years since its release. A big deal for the time? For sure. Still as meaningful today? Nooooot so much.

Anyway, I totally get why people think this movie is boring, but I find it a very fascinating film. Transformers 2, now that's boring (to me).

Completely and totally agreed. It's such a deep film on so many levels. yes it's slow, and seems to get bogged down in fits of "Oh hey, look at this special effect!" every now and again. But it's also incredible.

I didn't try to comprehend 2001. Really, I figured the thoughts and ideas he tried to present would annoy me. I'm still pretty certain of that.

And so I watched it to enjoy. And now can mimic HAL, and do so often with "I'm sorry Dave. I can't do that".

I last read them after watching 2001 for the last time, a couple of years ago. I don't have them bookmarked so looking them up again would take me as much time as it would take you.

Anyway, here's a basic explanation of the movie's plot. You might have already guessed most of this, depending on how much you thought the movie through and how perceptive you are.

Also, I remembered the title of one essay so I looked it up for you. This guy wrote a book that says that the movie is a triple allegory: of Nietzsche's book Thus Spoke Zarathustra (which IIRC is about man overcoming religion), of Homer's Odyssey and of Arthur C. Clarke ideas of a man-machine hybrid.

And the ideas are not as fresh? People are still debating Plato's philosophies, 40 years is not enough time for philosophical ideas to become un-fresh, so to speak. Considering that today many people consider stuff like the shallow B-movie moralizing of a movie like Equilibrium to be deep and meaningful, I consider a movie like 2001 that touches on many philosophical, technological and evolutionary ideas with this much depth (for those willing to look) to be very fresh and pretty much unsurpassed by other movies.

First time seeing this. It was incredible. Though my brother made this far less incredible by making us pause the movie 7 times throughout for bathroom breaks.

Alice in Wonderland--Disney version

If it had been written in the last 50 years, I would claim this was drug induced. Now I wonder at the monarchy at the time of Lewis Carol...

At any rate, the movie suits me to a T, being incomprehensible (for normal people at any rate...it made an alarming amount of sense to me in the places it wasn't supposed to) and bright colored. XD

The Mad Hatter is somewhat funny though...considering a chemical in hat making actually left many hat makers insane. XD

Despicable Me - Quite entertaining, and Carell owns the show, but there's still something forgettable about this flick..

Inception - I'm mad that I fell asleep during the best parts, but regardless of my failure, it remains a fantastic piece of work.

Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader - I went in with relatively low expectations and was still slightly disappointed. A few the scenes from the novel are done extremely well, and the casting of Eustace was brilliant, but as a whole it feels very disjointed. I absolutely hated the green mist that they chose to portray in lieu of a plot and by the end it was all cheesy and overdone. Naysayers will speak what they will, but Prince Caspian remains the far superior in the film series.

The A-Team - Good cast, semi-decent execution. Liam Neeson is great, as always, and Sharlto Copley continues to impress. Rampage Jackson can GDIAF though.
