My reason for thinking it less effective is because, while it may be an ideas movie, the ideas are not as fresh. We've hit on them a bit in the last 40 years. I found it fun to read essays on what Kubrick wanted to say with this movie, there is an unbelievable and almost unrivaled amount of depth in this movie.
It might be less effective today but that's mostly because audiences have changed, they're not used to such slow movies anymore where you have to figure stuff out for yourselves.
That said, I'd definitely be interested in reading some of these essays. If you have a few favored ones you could link me to, that'd be appreciated.
