The Phantom of the Opera (2004 version)

Well, I must say I was pretty impressed by this movie. I liked the style they chose for the film, having some scenes from the "Present" (1919) which are black and white, and some scenes from the "Past" (1870) which are full color and very rich color at that. The acting was very well done, though I admittedly thought Gerard Butler could have done better singing. The music was fantastic, catchy, and very memorable. The overall effect was very wowing to me.

I know some will disagree, but hey, this is my review not yours.

Repo! The Genetic Opera

First, a disclaimer: I cannot in good faith recommend this for people with squeamish stomachs and a dislike of Rock music. If you're still reading, then good for you. Because the movie is bloody (no pun int....nope, it WAS intentional) awesome. Seriously. For a fairly ridiculous movie, it pulls off great storytelling and has some absolutely exceptional songs. A cameo by Joan Jett sure doesn't hurt either. Oh and by the way, the cast includes none other than the exceptional Anthony Stewart Head.

Like I said before, it's not for those of weak-stomach. But if you can get past the gore, some toplessness, some language, and a generally depressing setting, you will find an amazingly awesome rock opera.

Well, I finally got around to seeing this. I was actually pretty impressed by it. Some of got ridiculous even by horror/thriller standards, but in the end it was solid. The end was kinda weak, even for not resolving anything. I have this much to say about the scare factor: It was solidly done. It's not the scariest thing I've seen, or the grossest, but it pulls off these quite nicely. As a hobbyist gore designer, I found a lot of very well done shots of the disturbing imagery.

All in all, a solid movie, even if it's not the best. Well worth renting in my opinion.

If you're a gore designer you should watch The Thing (the John Carpenter version from 1982). I watched it tonight and it has pretty much the best non-CGI gore effects I've ever seen.

Along with Braindead maybe (known in the USA as Dead Alive), that movie also has great practical gore effects that don't come out of the computer, and it's very funny to boot.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1

Pretty good, even if it did take a few liberties with the story. Though they really worked themselves into a rut by stripping a few elements from previous books, so I don't know how much they could include. At any rate, I found it highly enjoyable.

The Village - A decent, albeit cheesy movie from early M. Night Shyamalammadingdong. C+

O - Wasn't as good as I was expecting it to be, but I'm not sure what I was expecting. However, Josh Hartnett turned in a surprisingly good performance and there was some decent turns from the rest of the cast. Othello didn't translate as well to a high school setting as I thought it would...C+

I watched Match Point the other night.

One of the two recent Woody Allen movies that I've absolutely loved. The characters here are tragic, misguided figures, and there's a real sense of sorrow permeating the film. Oh, and Scarlett Johansson wasn't terrible and didn't overact (like she usually does), which was a plus.

Tangled with some friends.

As expected, the male lead was rather enjoyable (bonus points for barely singing the entire movie) as were the animals. Unfortunately, there was much more singing than expected (I didn't pay enough attention to notice it was Disney >_>). There was also a cliched "hostile tough guys turn docile and friendly with a music number" scene. However, Rapunzel managed to strike a balance between the innocent and sheltered girl she's supposed to be and the typical "not quite in distress" princess. I wasn't expecting that. If only she could go fifteen minutes without a song.

I give it a B.

Finding Nemo until my mom called and asked for help with a BSOD.....good as usual

The Next Three Days

Not what I expected, but then, what I expected was more standard action fare. This was a pretty good movie, with a lot of human elements in it. Certainly not a great film, but still very well done.

Watched Unleashed tonight, a French/British co-production starring Jet Li and Morgan Freeman and written by Luc Besson. Some spectacular fight sequences, some absolutely despicable criminals you love to hate, but also a lot of genuine warmth and touching moments, especially in the middle section of the movie.

Came out inspired by the characters of Morgan Freeman and Kerry Conran, who play an old blind man and his stepdaughter. The way they are welcoming towards an unknown stranger like that, are open-minded, outgoing, caring and show compassion the way they do. That's also what I want to be like, through the power of the Holy Spirit. Good movie.

EDIT: also, Jet Li shows he can act as well as fight.
