Inglorious Basterds

Well, it was pretty good.

Way too long during some scenes, and excruciatingly short during others.

In short, when this film was good, it was amazing.

When it wasn't, it was a drawn out experience in a dull way.

Well, those scenes were long for a reason. Many of Quentin Tarantino's movies are dialogue driven, and that requires long scenes to really build up suspense and authenticity. I can understand why that bothers plenty of people, but it's easier to appreciate it when you're aware of its importance. It's just the type of artform.

Oddly enough, the Shosanna story arc is the one I cared most for. To me, it seemed the most developed and personal. The others were about things and actions, but she's the only character I truly felt a bond to, the only character I thought had any meaningful depth. The other characters didn't seem nearly as developed. Most of them did what they did, and that was it. Because of the realism in dialogue Riley-sensei referred to, I feel like the characterizations suffered.

I still found the movie very good, and very interesting, but the character development was not its high point for me.

I like me some Tarantino, by the way. In fact, I think I should watch Sukiyaki Western Django again in light of this fact.

Also... I want to see Sukiyaki Western Django so very much, even if he didn't direct it. I love him enough to want to see a movie simply because he's in it. o_o

That movie is brilliant. Some would say weird. It's certainly not for those who don't like to "think" when watching their films.

And Stanley Kubrick's directing is utterly amazing, much as it was in The Shining.

It's amazing how so much can be said with so little dialogue.

guess not, but I've never seen one of his movies before.



Anyway, I think I would have cared more about the characters if more than half of the dialog was relayed through English.

As it stood, I have a freaking hard time reading subtitles and focusing on the movie too.


If it wasn't such a big focus, I might have enjoyed the intense dialog more.

As it stood, the only subbed scenes that really deserved the long dialog, that I can recall (And bear in mind, I watched this movie around 1 AM Christmas Day) were the beginning, the bit at the restaurant, and the English speaking scenes. I will be honest, I would have loved this movie if there hadn't been so much subbing. Yeah, I know it's necessary toportray realism, but I always though tarentino was less about realism and more about.....other stuff. (*has no idea what he means*)

Anyway, maybe if i was coherent, and could actually read most of the subtitles, then maybe I'd appreciate the movie more.

Really really really really fun movie to watch. If you weren't going to see it in theaters. YOU FAIL. I'm not saying it was an amazing movie, I'm just saying I had a blast watching this.

Oh. I think you're absolutely right; Tarantino achieves what he is aiming for so far as I can tell. I don't know so much that characters need to be "relatable or touching" per se, but it's hard to feel anything for what I understand nothing about.

I don't have to like a protagonist or antagonist; I could absolutely hate a protagonist. I simply prefer characterization that warrants some feeling toward a given character, be it good or bad. It seems to me that Inglorious was full of caricatures rather than characters. That's not to discredit the film or Tarantino's ability. Far from it. I'm just calling it as I see it.

And I still see the movie as solid and interesting.

Serenity

I've done too much raving about it already, so you guys are just gonna have to settle with me saying that I think it's a phenomenal movie and is one of my very, very favorites. That's not to say that it didn't have some noticeable flaws, but once again, they weren't anything to get whiny over. I loved it so much. o_o

Avatar - Yeah, I saw it again. This time in 3D. I drifted in and out of sleep for the last half hour or so, in case you're wondering what I thought about it.

Wo shi shei - Unfair to use the Chinese title for the film, since it's in English, but this Jackie Chan movie was one of my absolute favorites when I was a kid, and seeing it again after many years just brings back some good memories. It's still cheesy, some of the acting is absolutely awful, but the choreography, especially in the final scenes, is impeccable, and the final fight remains my favorite Jackie Chan moment of all time.

And yes Deep, you should see it. You probably won't care for it too much, because it's... well, got no action. Or very little.

It is a masterpiece though.



And I last watched Fellowship of the Ring extended.

So. Darn. Good. That has to be my tenth-twelfth time in all, and it's still easily my favorite movie all time (meaning the whole trilogy, not just Fellowship; you can't have one without the other).

Nix, have you seen Serenity? If not, you absolutely need to. Based off of some of the movies you like, I think you would really, really enjoy it. It's also written and directed by Joss Whedon, so that might motivate you. XD
