They don't entirely, but it's partly genetics, partly the way they bring you up. For example, if you are exposed to art/math/science at an early age, you might show more inclinations towards it in the future.
Also, what's a mech unit? Sounds like mech pilot.

Which is...surprisingly fun.
Why am I drawn to that which hurts me?
In this case, since that may be too vague for anyone's brain but mine brain, why do I keep wanting to play games I know will freak me out? XD
