The Prince of Tides

I recall something that Oscar on The Office said about this movie: "It's bad. Really bad."

Well, I wouldn't call it that. There were some amazing performances in it. Nick Nolte was really, really impressive... most of the time. Streisand was... meh. And the story was, overall, moving. But the first twenty minutes and the majority of the last thirty are just bad. We're talking almost excruciating here:

"Oh Dr. Lowenstein."
"Oh Nick Nolte."

Shut up and get the scene over with already. I mean... ugh.

On the other hand, the movie was about two hours and ten minutes... so forty bad minutes out of it isn't the worst thing in the world.

The Color of Magic - Based on the first two Discworld novels. If you're a Terry Pratchett fan, you'll like this; it's pretty faithful to the source material. It's a made for TV movie (released in the UK last year), but the quality is surprisingly good. The casting is excellent; I don't remember seeing the guy who played Rincewind in anything else, but he was perfect. The soundtrack was good, and the special effects were pretty decent considering this was a made for TV movie. My only real beef with the movie is that it is too long (about 3 hours and change). It does have two parts; maybe I should have spaced it out a bit. Overall, I'd give it a solid B.

Gangs of New York

I pretty much loved this movie. Once again, Daniel Day-Lewis rocked my socks off, but even he was outdone by Liam Neeson. I loved the movie setting, the characters, the story progression. I loved all of it. But like too many "amazing" movies I've seen lately... it failed to really strike an emotional connection with me. It's too bad, really.

That and the frequency/duration of nudity/sexuality kept it from being getting called phenomenal by me.

So far today... I have watched...

Push

and

Dirty Harry

In this weather, where the temp is above 100 degrees, there's not much else to do. Which means, by midnight, I'll probably also watch...

Dragon Ball

and

Hard Boiled

The Producers (2005) - A movie of the broadway musical version of Mel Brooks' 1968 movie about two guys trying to make the worst Broadway play ever so they can run off with the investor's money. Maybe it's because I'm not the biggest fan of musicals (I don't hate them, it's just not my favorite genre), but I got kind of bored during most of the songs. "Keep It Gay" had me laughing, and "Springtime for Hitler" was worth the price of admission. The rest of it was just okay. B-

Watchmen - My new favorite superhero movie. *hides from the Dark Knight fanboys* A+

I need to see the Producers.

Yesterday, I saw...

Horsemen

A Dennis Quaid movie I didn't hear anything about until the disc was being put into my 360, but it was surprisingly interesting and hauntingly disturbing. Overall, a pleasant surprise.

...and...

Coraline

This movie was straight up strange. Good... but strange. And I won't lie... the button eyes were definitely creepy. >.>

Iron Man

I've seen it a few times, but this time I watched it with more Marvel knowledge, and it made the movie that much cooler.

Take "Rhodey," the US Armed Forces friend, for example. In Marvel canon, he becomes Iron Man while Tony is heavily on the bottle. Once Tony sobers up and returns to being Iron Man, he creates a new suit for Rhodes, and Rhodes becomes War Machine.

So, in the movie, when Rhodes finds Tony lacking a heart and gets him back into shape... as he's leaving Tony's basement he sees another suit and says "Next time, baby."

The suit is quite possibly War Machine's suit, and his comment is a foreshadowing of what will come of Rhodes.

TOO GOOD
