Meat is an ingredient. Not a meal in itself.

Most of the time if you make it at your house steak is CHEWY! But at restaurants its not so chewy.

Biscuits and sausage gravy is absolutely delicious. When my wife and I were in college, we did something different when we went to the cafeteria. Instead of putting the sausage gravy on biscuits, we put it on the hashbrowns. Now that's really good! Not healthy for you, but oh so tasty....

Doing NaNo this year?

I'm really disappointed in how my last novel turned out, so I'm trying to think of some way to shake it up a bit this year so I can challenge myself as a writer. I've been playing Mount & Blade lately, so I'm thinking of trying my hand at Fantasy in a medieval-ish setting.

I'm also hoping to use this as an excuse to more fully devote myself to either outlining or "discovery" writing, as my hybrid approach last year didn't go so well.

Gravy and hashbrowns sounds amazing. Two fantastic things put together.

Best place you've eaten hashbrowns?

Go for it! There's nothing wring with taking experimental approaches with writing. Try it from different perspectives, or genres, or even subject matters. Shake things up a bit, and see what you like.

Me, I'm thinking of writing a serial this year. Every day will be a new chapter or two, with about 1,000-1,500 words per chapter. The plan is to have something that I can post, a week at a time, on one of the "serials" Web sites, like JukePop. Hopefully it'll be another way for me to get my name out there, and attract more of an audience.

Both, potentially! I've been posting on my blog about National Novel Writing Month for the past week (see the link in my signature), but if you've always wanted to be a writer, and want to prove it to yourself, then this is the perfect opportunity to do so. Do your best to crank out that 50,000 word first draft, and at the end of November... you'll have the first draft of a novel, sore fingers, and a profound sense of accomplishment.

Now don't expect your draft to be ready for a publisher! It will need lots of editing, revising, tweaking and rewriting before you'll probably feel as if it's ready to show to others. But at the same time, it's more than what you had on October 31. A lot more. You have a first draft, and you've proven that you have the chops to be a writer.

And if you don't make it the first time, don't feel bad. Life can often get in the way. There's always next year!

If you don't mind, Sstavix, I'd also like to contribute my two cents as a first-time participant last year.

It can go both ways. I did it because I have always liked writing, I just never found the time to do it what with being an engineering/science student while at university and then in the job market. So having a fixed goal, a hard deadline, and a word-counting tool (Helpful in more ways than one) was exactly what I needed to get up and go for it. It is fun to do, but I also think it can help hone certain skills writers need (Finishing, not editing until after you've finished the first draft, writing in consistent intervals, etc), and for me that makes it a prime time to practice. Plus, 50,000 word isn't exactly a small number, and that's a cool sense of accomplishment.

Anyway, that's my take.

Now, for Sstavix:

Have you ever seen any of Brandon Sanderson's Creative Writing lectures at BYU? If this is news to you, he does a course every year on Fantasy and Science Fiction writing at BYU, and has the lectures recorded and uploaded for all to peruse. Each lecture is long (A little over an hour on average), but there is some very useful information in there.

If you've already seen them, then maybe that info dump can help someone else.
