To be fair, I saw one of FIF's reunion shows in Detroit and it was pretty fun.

Couldn't hear some important instruments at all without earplugs because the trombone player was blaring into a mic, but you know, mindless fun :P

And then I had to drive home and had to take four motrin for my headache >_>

If I had been drinking soda while reading this, it would have come out of my nose. Let's face it, most Christian bands are just bad copies of better mainstream acts.

But to be fair, there are a couple of Christian albums that I, a guy who generally can't stand Christian music, still listen to. One of them in particular is probably my favorite album of all time.

First off, one of them is Gold by Starflyer 59, which is basically a one-man project by Jason Martin (his brother Ronnie Martin was the sole member of Joy Electric). It's shoegazer stuff, way ahead of its time, especially for a Christian album (and it's basically the only thing overtly Christian about it is that it was on a Christian record label). I loved this album when I was 16-17ish, probably wore out the CD because I played it so much. I bought it on iTunes the other day in a fit of nolstalgia and it still hold up pretty darn well. Here's a couple of songs:

Apparently, Starflyer is still around with Jason Martin at the helm, but I haven't heard much of their later stuff.

Next, one of my favorites, if not my favorite, albums of all time: Mercury by The Prayer Chain. I'll be real honest, the first couple of times I listened to it I was pretty weirded out. There are really only a couple of songs that work as singles, and they tend to be 10 minutes long and full of feedback, strange middle-eastern influenced percussions, and some pretty dark lyrics. But man, once it grows on you, it's darn good stuff. Think Pink Floyd if they were Christians in the 90's, and had just finished listening to a bunch of Smashing Pumpkins. The album tends to be better if you listen to it altogether, but here's a couple of songs that stand out pretty well on their own:

I seriously listen to Mercury at least once a week. Unfortunately, it's out of print (The Prayer Chain broke up after this album, and apparently this album fueled their breakup), so the only place to get it is on Amazon (where it has twenty or so user reviews, every single one of them perfect).

So yes, there is some good--REALLY good--Christian music out there, and this is coming from an atheist. ;)

O.O
I must go look for that now.

Well, if you ask me I think that every band- Christian or NOT- is going to sound similar to another band or like a combination of some. It doesn't matter if there is a band with some "hot new CD", it has been done millions of times.

Yes. Almost.

The reality of truly "original" bands is exceedingly low. Christians bands get picked on for doing the exact same thing most everyone else does, though I can't really see why.

Back in the 80-90's, it was at a more ridiculous level, true. There are some songs that are almost exact copies musically. XD

However, all of this ignores the lyrics of said songs, which are almost always radically opposed to their secular counterparts.
