The Parables of Jesus

The parable of the mustard seed:

1) I'm beginning to wonder if I am missing something in this question, or misunderstanding it; Maybe Jesus was telling them that the Kingdom was going to start small?

2) A mustard seed.

3) That it is so very tiny, compared to the huge plant it results in.

4) A rather large tree-like plant.

5) The prophecy in Daniel where a stone broke off of the statue and destroyed it, then grew into a mountain that filled the earth.

6) It's beginnings; at the start, it was small. But it rapidly grew into something thousands of times larger than it was.

7) Even though it may seem a very tiny, insignificant thing, it can grow into a mountain.

It started with one man. It's grown into billions.

9) The lost.

10) I suppose how many birds it can hold.

It started small, and grew; eventually it will fill the earth. It's a place of safety too, no matter how small it may seem at times.

2. The kingdom of heaven is like leaven
3. I'm assuming it's like yeast
4. It's what makes bread rise when baking it
5. Evil, or false doctrine if you look at Luke 12:1

10. Leaven will transform whatever it is put into

The parable of the Leaven

1. I think Jesus was continuing his teaching on the sea shore; I think this was when he was about to leave of the other side of the lake.

2. Yeast that a woman worked into a large amount of flour until it was worked through the whole piece of dough.

3. It was, as far as I understand it, yeast. Yeast generally floats around everywhere, and if you leave bread dough alone long enough, it'll get "infected" by it and become a dough "starter".

4. It grows and spread throughout the dough like a virus or fungus, feeding off of the flour and "burping" Co2 bubbles.

5. Teachings; in this case, Jesus' teachings.

6. God, I think. Since only he can cause us to grow.

7. Into a large amount of flour; the amount of people that would hear and respond to the message?

8. That it spreads from a very small amount into a very large lump of dough.

9. Basically, the same way now as it does then. Except we can use chemicals to make the burps instead of yeast. But it grows and feeds and infects the grains of flour until the whole lump of dough is filled.

10. Because it is everywhere, and you will get infected by it; which kind is your choice. It also fills you up completely.

To watch what I listen to, since it can majorly affect me; probably without me even knowing it.

7. The treasure is us, the elect which God has found and chosen and put us back into the world to reach others

8. Joyfully selling everything he has for the treasure

9. Not sure, we're not sure what the guy was doing on the field or digging in it in the first place

10. Jesus willingly sacrificed all that he had for us

Jesus loves us dearly and leaves us in the world to impact others because he loves them too.

The parable of the hidden treasure

1. The disciples had asked him to explain his parables; I also think he told it to them to help alleviate the fears they had after hearing the parable of the weeds? His disciples.

2. A very great treasure; worth giving your life over, and worth more than life itself.

3. I imagine it's the person who becomes saved.

4. First he buries it again, which I'm not sure I understand, but then he gives up everything he owns to purchase it.

5. The land containing the treasure.

6. Is it the message of Christ?

7. Salvation, I think. I think the point is that you actually have to go look for it; it isn't provided unless you do.

8. He doesn't care, considering what he is getting in return.

9. I don't think that is the point of the parable.

10. Jesus is worth more than anything.

That whatever we may have to give up for Jesus, it's worth it, and that we have to do a bit of searching to find him.

4. The merchant is deliberately searching for treasure and didn't stumble upon it

8. We must not be tied to worldly things, sacrifice everything we have for eternal rewards
9. Think of eternal treasure not earthly
10. Give up our old life and focus on our eternal one

Until now I thought this parable was about man seeking God but it's about Jesus seeking us

The parable of the Pearl of great Price

1) It sounds like Jesus is teaching his disciples privately, inside of the house.

2) A merchant of fine pearls.

3) Pearls of especial quality.

4) The emphasis in the other parable was giving everything up for a hidden treasure. In this one, it is a seller of treasures giving everything he had away for one special treasure.

5) I'm not sure. I always thought it was supposed to be people searching for Jesus.

6) I think it would be salvation.

7) He gives up everything he had for it.

He was searching for special treasure, and he was willing to give up everything for it.

9) That we should search for "pearls", and be willing to give up anything to acquire them.

10) I'm uncertain. We could be willing to give up our comforts and happiness for the greater joy of that special pearl?

Again, that we should search for treasure, and be willing to give up anything for it.

But you know, I think you're right CCGR. I think the merchant could be Jesus, searching for us.

The parable of the drag net.

1) The disciples had asked Jesus to explain the parable of the weeds in the field to them, and he continued teaching afterwards.

2) A large net thrown into the sea.

3) A drag net. A large net which required a lot of people to work it.

4) Into the sea.

5) The fisherman, or fishermen.

6) When the fishermen believe it to be full.

7) Put all the fish in baskets, then toss out the bad ones, keeping only the good.

The end of the age, when the angles will go out, separate people into good and bad, and throw the bad ones into the blazing furnace.

9) I don't know. Maybe graves?

10) People who never asked asked God for forgiveness.

We want to be among the good fish, and God does make a distinction between evil and good.

1. I'm assuming they were out and about because the previous chapter has him meeting people and children.
2. A man with a vineyard

4. A penny, the same
5. No one hired them
6. A penny
7. More than the people hired later
8. The same, they were upset
9. They worked more than the others
10. That all agreed to the same payment amount no matter what time they were hired.

The Lord will reward all of his followers no matter when in their life they start following him. We're all children of God, we're all equal and it's not by our work that gets us in. It's only through grace.

The Parable of the laborers in the Vineyard

1) I think Jesus is traveling around, preaching to crowds and his disciples.

2) A landowner who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard.

3) He goes out searching to hire workers.

4) A denarius to the first. To the rest "Whatever is right".

5) No one hired them.

6) A denarius, which is a days wages.

7) They thought they were going to get more.

They got what they agreed to; they were unhappy with it, and complained.

9) They had faced the burning heat and worked all day long, whereas the others had gotten off easy.

10) That he paid them what they agreed to, and he was doing them on wrong. Should the earlier workers complain because the man was generous?

God will save any and all who answer his call, no matter when. Deathbed repentance is as good as a childhood step of faith.

The Parable of the Two Sons

1. Jesus is in the temple after shriveling up the fig tree, I think he's still hungry.
2. God/Jesus
3. A vineyard, his kingdom
4. work in the vineyard
5. no, the unbeliver
6. yes, false belivers
7. repent, nothing
8. Which did the will of the father?
9. Jesus compared their response to their reception to John the baptist
10. publicans and harlots since they believe

Even if you reject God at first, he'll still take you back if you're ready to commit

The Parable of the Two Sons

1) Jesus was in the temple, answering questions.

2) God, I think.

3) A vineyard. I think it represents the world.

4) To go and "work in the Vineyard".

5) The first son said "I will not". A turning down of salvation.

6) The second son said "I will, sir". I think it's someone who pretends to be saved, but is not.

7) The first son changed his mind and went; the second son lied, and never went.

"Which of the two did what his father wanted?"

9) No matter what the people had said or did, if they turned and followed Jesus, they would be "working in the vineyard" by doing what God said.

10) Tax Collectors and prostitutes who actually listened.

Obeying God is more important than saying we'll obey Him.

The Parable of the Wicked Husbandmen

1. Jesus is still in the temple
2. I think the householder is God
3. The vineyard represents the world
5. Sounds like demons to me
6. I think they're prohpets
7. his son, Jesus
8. the inheritance, the world
9. Destroy and replace, when he comes back
10. followers of Christ

Don't reject God, he's calling for you

The parable of the Great Supper

1. At the house of one of the chief Pharisees
2. God, his kingdom
3. The preferred, perhaps the Jews
4. Earthly excuses (tend to land, oxen, marriage), more important than following God
5. The poor, gentiles
6. Those that are not close by.
7. Haven't searched everywhere that's why there's still more room. Have to go to the ends of the earth
8. They'll miss out
9. I think the other parables lie in the excuses

a. Don't allow physical wealth to rob you of spiritual wealth
b. Don't make your job your first priority
c. Don't let relationships interfere with your relationship with God

10. Keep your priorities straight
