Bummer.

Reading LOTR amazes me, because the characters are actually believable. And Middle Earth is described in terms so vivid it isn't hard at all to imagine them.

He was amazing. Also, it took him 18 years to write LOTR. So, he had plenty of time to think up ideas. :wink:

He was trying to create a myth on the scale of those of Rome and Greece, but for England. Ultimately he failed in that manner, but redefined the fantasy genre completely.

And, he did die before he finished. The Sil's fragmented, the Second Age minimal, nothing was near what he wanted.
