Got snake! *dances* ^_^ I'm hyped. It's going to be hard to leave him alone though, I'll tell you. He's pretty amazing to watch though. I couldn't believe how high he stretched up toward the top of the cage. O_O
He's curled up under a flap of newspaper at the hot end at the moment, poking his head out to watch me every now and then. I'm so happy.
Also, guy said he fed them all yesterday, so can I take the feeding schedule off of that?
It was fun to watch him drink. ^_^ Funny as it sounds, I didn't know how snakes drank. It was really cool watching his throat move in and out actually drinking. I'm used to slurping dogs.
Have you read through all of the Lord of the Rings?
Multiple... times. Same with the Hobbit.
I consider them masterpieces. Both the films and the books.

So awesome.
And yeah, dude... does he crawl around at the top of the cage? Like... in between the screen and the 10 gal's top? My king does that... and I have no idea how such a small snake gets up there. (he's MAYBE 12 inches, just a hatchling)
And... he's not shy? Doesn't mind being watched when drinking or just being watched in general? That's always a good sign.
Yeah, snakes drinking is awesome. They just stick their noses in the water and... suck. XD
Also, yes... I'd feed him either Friday or Saturday, probably give him a try Friday. I think you'll be fine holding him within 2-3 days, he sounds like he's already "broken" in a bit. Some snakes are soooooo shy and/or nippy at first. Like my king... he ain't shy, but he sure did bite at first. XD Doesn't sound like you'll have that problem, though (shouldn't with a corn, they're great snakes. Kings... they've sometimes got attitude problems, I'm told XD)
So yeah, give him a hold (just let him crawl around through your fingers, I don't mean bring him around the house yet) probably Thursday and try feeding him Friday. Just remember, after he eats (btw, did the breeder mention if he was on f/t?)... don't hold him for a good solid 48 hours. They can regurgitate their food, which is... really bad for the snake, not to mention wasteful. <_<
At the moment, he just stretches up toward the top with his nose. He does all sorts of defying-gravity tricks I didn't know were possible. He climbed a cord earlier though. I think I'm going to get more cage clips.
He kinda doesn't really mind being watched. He'll keep an eye on me when I'm near, but still goes about his business. Also, the breeder had no trouble picking him or any of his things up. I think he handles them a lot. Or at least some.
Breeder (who's name is Eric) said he was on Frozen/live pinkies. He breeds his own at the shop, so I'm guessing he freezes some to have pinkies on hand at all times.
That, or feeding is going to be a bit tricky at first...
Also, did you know you can lower the temp of those basking bulbs using aluminum foil?

Ah, yeah. That's how any new snake will act, at least. If they don't know you they'll kinda look at you like... "yo d00d watcho lookin' at". XD
My corn was like that when I first got him. Now, he's about 2 1/2-3 years old and he completely and totally ignores me. -_-
I can knock on his glass and try to get his attention, which will last for about a second. XD
And about the breeder handling him, yeah. That's kinda what I was wondering. If he's already been held a ton, then go ahead and let him check you out. Unless you feel otherwise, because as I said in Hang Out you know him best. XD
Ah, so I guess the breeder says he'll eat either? XD
Well, my king and baby corn were both on live when I got them (same with boa). The corn and king gave absolutely no trouble when I tried f/t. They are the piggiest snakes I've ever owned. XD
Boa... well, she's a completely different kind of snake. She'll eat f/t, but only at about 11 at night and only if it's 100% dark in my room. She's... weird. XD
I think you'll be fine though, I've never, ever had a corn turn down a meal. Even when blue.
Aaaand. I have heard something about that, but it sounded fishy (read it on the interwebz). But... foil really works? I'z never tried it. XD
I put my hand in the cage earlier, and he was like "What you doing Willis?!?!" So I'ma give him a while more before I try to hold him for more than a moment or two. I held him earlier today when he was sleeping, and then later when he woke up a bit. He was surprisingly fast. XD Almost went up my sleeve before I knew what he was doing.
Speaking of holding him, I know it's way too early because he isn't even used to me yet, but how do I get him to know other people? My Mom and my sister both want to hold him.
And the foil thing did work. I tried it because it was my only choice. Just lay a sheet out over your cage, and poke enough holes into it until the temp is right.

Ah, Okay. Sounds like he's a little shy. Not a bad thing, but yeah. Forcing the issue can cause problems with a snake, especially in the feeding area. And aye, they're fast. O.O
As to getting him to know others, well... after he's got no problem with you, you should be able to introduce him to others (you hold him first though, don't have a complete stranger go into his cage). Just hold him your self, and have your mom/sister reach out their hand to him and let him crawl onto them. That's what I've done (just did with the king yesterday to mah sis), and usually works fine.
And thanks for the foil tip. I ain't neva tried that. I may have to though.
And your mom wants to hold him? That's awesome. Mine will hold the "little" snakes, at least when they're hatchlings... but boa... not a chance. XD
Hmm...He seems to kinda remember who I am. And he still hasn't tried to nip at me. Just given me a dirty look or two. He didn't like me disturbing his acrobatics last night.
Also, I haven't seen him drink much. How much do they need to drink?
And it'll take time for him to know you, really. I've had my king for... what... 3 weeks is it? Since November 8th, whenever that was. And just now he's getting to know me. So yeah... it'll take time... but he'll get to know you eventually. XD
Aaaand. Snakes can go MUCH longer than us humans without water. So don't be surprised if you don't see them drinking often. For mine, well... boa seems to drink... never (I've seen her drink maybe three or four times total in the 2-ish years I've had her, since she was a baby)... king and corn I catch drinking maybe once a week. Then again, most snakes don't like being watched ('cept for king, who drinks when I'm holding him. No. Joke. XD), and usually will take a sip during the night when alone or when nobody is around. XD
So he's probably drinking more, just when you're not around. I know mine do, especially the boa, because I can tell when they're wet.
Snakes are very different animals, probably one of the most unique on the planet. They're solitary; the type of pet that, as long as it has its basics, isn't going to care if you leave for a day or a month. They also are... weird. They do thing like... DEFY GRAVITY. XD
Um... depends. I like "real" dogs, as in ones that are actually useful and large. Those little dogs that you see? The ones that stay "puppy size"? Well, they're just boa food to me.
So yes, I love dogs... just not those "mini" ones. XD
Shoot, my dachshund would take down a human if you annoyed her enough.
I have another question...I have a box set up to feed Jayne in separate from his home, but how do I get him back into his aquarium afterwords, without him barfing?
GarthVader wrote:Mini ones really don't qualify as 'dogs', imo.
But you know, a little dog could kill a big one. It'd get stuck in it's throat. XD XD
Ever played Battlefield Bad Company?
I have the demo, and I like it a lot. Want the game.

After he's finished eating, wait about 10-15 minutes and then just pick him up and put him in his cage. He won't barf, don't worry. XD
It's really when you "handle" them after they eat that can cause problems. But just moving the snake shouldn't do a thing.
Though, I do kinda... recommend feeding him in his cage for the first few times. Just in case he's a picky eater. Some snakes won't eat, especially if they're new, if you just touched them. I've fed the king (and all the others, but king is most recent) in his/her cage for the first 4 times or so. Next time he goes to a box, since now I know he's got no trouble/shyness eating. XD
If you prefer to move Jayne to a box right off, you probably won't have any trouble... but you never know with a new snake.
So yeah, I just recommend feeding in his cage for the first couple times. If he pigs it down the first time (like I expect he will being a corn XD) then hey... go to the box on the second feeding.
Chozon1 wrote:Makes sense. ^_^ Do I feed him at night or during the day?
To clarify, when my night bulb is on him or when the day bulb is?
Um... you know, I've never thought of that. XD
I always feed during the day, and the king and corn both eat readily. Boa as I said before doesn't eat unless it's around 11 at night give or take an hour, but she's the boa. XD
But yeah, I'd just try feeding him during the day some time. Corns perk up VERY quickly when you offer them food, regardless if they were asleep or not. XD
