More killing, though? This is just my opinion, maybe it is ignorance of god's love. But I'm not in Amazon, so I can't say what God is doing because I don't know.

I would hypothesize that the 'holy ground' or 'evil ground' strictures set up by the shamans caused target animals to congregate to those areas. Animals aren't stupid; if they see that a threat avoids a certain area they'll tend to stay near it. Now that those areas aren't off limits the animals 1. have nowhere to run and 2. may additionally be more densely populated in those areas and thus easier to hunt and kill.
