Chris Roberts (Wing Commander) is working on a open world space sim: Star Citizen.

I can't emphasize how much I'm excited about this game.
Open World.
Emphasis on Immersion and Exploration.
Constantly expanding universe.
Starship dog fighting.
Support for Oculus Rift.
Player generated economy.
Straight up beautiful spacecraft.
Co-op play, a friend can fly as a wing man or even as a gunner on your ship.
Realistic Physics.
And so on.

Not to mention Chris Robert is THE man for space sims.

So, what do you guys think?

I approve of this game idea. This coming from a person, that's not that much into space sims - I've only been deeply in love with Freespace 1 & 2, but I guess that's enough.

EDIT: Read their website, they really know how to appeal to the "neglected space sim player". It's all rather true, but I still found it rather amusing :)

Oh I was, and they're definitely appealing to me. I was on the prowl for an immersive space game, one that really makes me feel like I have a starship and can travel the galaxy... I think finally found it.

Freespace is a pretty good space sim, but in my opinion, Wing Commander and Freelancer were the best to be had.

Aye, I acknowledge Freespace maybe wasn't the best, but I still loved it. I never got into WC or Freelancer, although I did know such existed... I just was put off by some crappy Wing Commander movie that came out and was a complete fiasco, and thus never touched the series :/ I know it was silly of me, but it just happened.

I know there's some good (free) space sim projects out there before you'll get your hands on this baby, a friend was trying to get me to play Babylon 5: I've Found Her a while back for example.

Oh, EVE Online might work for you too. It's not a sim, but it's got an immersive player-generated universe. It's a MMO I did review for CCGR some time ago. Just mentioning, you probably know it already.

I desperately wanted to love EVE, but I just couldn't. I never got into the PVP or player driven elements of it, so I was never fully engaged. I ended up just paying for the subscription and watching my ship fly.
Ahhh... my Rupture...

And now I want to play again. But I know I'd do nothing.

Anyhow, if you're up for trying a new one, I recommend Freelancer. It's newer, very accessible, and plays great with a mouse and keyboard. The campaign is fun, and there's gameplay after it's over, too. You can also set up one of your computers as a server and play with a friend. We did that on CCGR for a little bit, too.
