his question brings to mind John 3:8:

“The wind blows wherever it pleases.

You hear its sound, but cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going.

So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”

The word spirit in both Hebrew and Greek means “breath” or “wind.” Both a breath of air and a breeze are appropriate images for the Holy Spirit.

Consider several properties of the wind.

1.Wind is moving air, and this fresh air is needed continually for life itself. Even seeds often require wind for their dispersal and subsequent growth. Similarly, the Holy Spirit is the presence of God, the source for all life.

2.Wind has no material shape or form. It is invisible; we cannot see the source or the destination of wind. It is a mysterious, unseen force. Nevertheless, its presence is known by its effects.

Likewise, the unseen Holy Spirit can be experienced in a refreshing way. His presence is displayed in the work he does in human lives by transforming, sanctifying, encouraging, and teaching.

3.Wind is a powerful force. It cannot be stopped or controlled by people. Likewise, the Holy Spirit is not subject to human control. The moving of the Holy Spirit is God at work.

4.There is great variety in the wind. It may be a soft whisper gently rustling the leaves on the trees, or it may be a hurricane uprooting trees.

Likewise, the Holy Spirit may gently bring a person to Christ, such as a little child raised in a Christian home, or he may work in some climactic, dramatic way to bring conviction and conversion to the hardened sinner.

In Acts 16, contrast Lydia, whose heart the Lord opened (verse 14), and the jailer, who needed an earthquake to jar him to his spiritual sense (verse 30). In both cases, the Holy Spirit did the regenerating work.

I believe this Holy spirit can take on many forms. In Matt 3:16 it was like a dove.
After being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and lighting on Him

Types of The Holy Spirit~

Someone has said that good teaching "turns men’s ears into eyes." This truly is exemplified in the Bible with its types, parables, similes and metaphors. Spiritual truths are presented in a multitude of earthly figures.

The person and work of the Holy Spirit is illustrated in Scripture by many types. A type is an object, person or event that prefigures another object, person or event.

Let’s consider some types of the Holy Spirit that are found in the Word of God. We need to understand that some things can be types of more than one person or event.

I. THE DOVE IS A TYPE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
A. THE HOLY SPIRIT TOOK ON THE FORM OF A DOVE AS HE DESCENDED FROM HEAVEN AND ABODE UPON CHRIST. (Jn. 1:32)

1. The dove is a fitting type of the Holy Spirit because of its beauty, gentleness, cleanliness and the fact that it is easily disturbed (Eph. 4:30).

2. The dove is also harmless and peaceable (Mt. 10:16).

B. THE SPIRIT IS SEEN BROODING OVER CREATION AS A BIRD OVER HER NEST (Gen. 1:2).

C. THE DOVE IS SENT OUT FROM THE ARK BY NOAH (Gen. 8:6-12).

- This dove is a type of the Holy Spirit in two ways.

1. The dove unlike the raven refuses to remain outside the ark when no clean resting place may be found (vv.8-9).

- The Spirit only indwells those who have been washed in the blood of Christ.

2. Seven days later, the dove brings back an olive leaf as a sign of hope to those in the ark (vv.10-11).

- This was a type of the Holy Spirit who brings assurance of salvation to those in Christ.

NOTE

- The raven was an unclean bird that loved to feed upon the dead things on the earth (Lev. 11:15).

- Birds are also used in Scripture as types of demon spirits (Mt. 13:4,19; Rev. 18:2).
II. OIL IS A TYPE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
A. OLIVE OIL IS A CONSTANT TYPE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN BOTH THE OLD AND NEW TESTAMENTS.

- It was an article of great importance in Palestine, being used for food, medicine, illumination and anointing.

B. THE TABERNACLE AND ITS FURNITURE WERE TO BE ANOINTED WITH OIL (Ex. 40:9-11).

- As the Tabernacle was a figure of Christ, so the oil pictured Him being anointed by the Spirit.

C. THE INTERIOR OF THE TABERNACLE WAS ILLUMINATED BY THE USE OF OIL (Ex. 27:20-21).

1. Each of the Tabernacle’s illuminated furnishings was a type of Christ.

2. So without the illumination of God’s Spirit, no one would ever see the glories of our Savior (I Cor. 2:14; II Cor. 4:3-6).

D. IN CLEANSING THE LEPER, BOTH BLOOD AND OIL WERE USED (Lev. 14:14-18).

1. This reveals that when one is saved from the leprosy of sin, that both the blood of Christ and the person of the Holy Spirit have a work to do.

E. THE ANOINTING WITH OIL OF PROPHETS, PRIESTS AND KINGS PREFIGURED CHRIST AS OUR PROPHET, PRIEST AND KING.

F. IN THE MEAT OFFERING, THE FINE MEAL WAS ANOINTED WITH OIL (Lev. 2:1).

1. The fine meal was a type of Christ sinless flesh, and the oil was a type of the Holy Spirit.

G. OIL IS OFTEN ASSOCIATED WITH HEALING IN THE BIBLE.

1. The sins of Judah and Jerusalem were so great that they were portrayed as open wounds that would not heal even though they were medicated with oil (Isa. 1:6).

2. The good Samaritan, dressed and medicated with oil, the wounds of the man that had been robbed and injured by thieves (Lk. 10:34).

3. The twelve went forth preaching repentance, casting out devils, anointing with oil, and healing many that were sick (Mk. 6:12-13).
a. The anointing with oil was an outward sign of healing.

b. The Holy Spirit brings spiritual healing.
III. WATER IS A TYPE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
- Water is a common type of the Holy Spirit in salvation.
A. WATER IS THE SOURCE OF LIFE.

1. Without water this world would be a parched and desolate wasteland.

2. Because man of himself is as the dry and barren land, God promises to moisten him with the waters of His Holy Spirit (Isa. 44:3).

3. The Lord had poured out His Spirit as Joel had prophesied (Acts 2:17).

- "All flesh" here means on both Jew and Gentile.

4. It is only the Holy Spirit who can bring any spiritual fruit into our lives (Gal. 5:22-23).

B. THE EARTH HAS AN ABUNDANCE OF WATER.

- Likewise the redeemed have a bountiful supply of the Spirit’s power (Jn. 7:38).

C. WATER IS NECESSARY FOR CLEANLINESS.

- It is the Holy Spirit who cleanses our heart in regeneration and continues to cleanse us as we daily approach the Throne Of Grace (Tit. 3:5).

D. THE HOLY SPIRIT IS COMPARED TO LIVING WATER FROM A RUNNING SPRING.

1. The Lord spoke to the woman at the well of this living water (Jn. 4:14).

2. The Holy Spirit is in every way superior to the stagnant wells and pools of this world.

3. While the pleasures of this life soon fade and run out, yet the Spirit of God is a constant inner spring of life and joy (Jn. 7:37-39).
IV. WIND IS A TYPE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
The wind is a special type of the Spirit. The Greek word for "spirit" is pneuma, which is also translated wind.

Our Lord referred to the wind as a type of the Spirit (Jn. 3:8).

A. THE WIND IS INVISIBLE IN ITS WORKINGS (Jn. 3:8).

- Christ hereby revealed the folly of connecting regeneration with visible signs like

baptism.

B. THE WIND IS NOT CONTROLLED BY MAN (Jn. 3:8).

- The Holy Spirit is sovereign in His workings.

C. THE PRESENCE OF THE WIND IS KNOWN BY ITS INFLUENCE (Jn. 3:8).

- Likewise the Holy Spirit is known to be present by His influence in hearts.

- The operation of the Holy Spirit, like the wind, is directed by God, unseen and known by His effects.

D. THE WIND IS A MIGHTY FORCE (Acts 2:1-2).

- The Holy Spirit can break the hardest heart.

E. JUST AS THE WIND MOVES A SAILBOAT, SO GOD’S SPIRIT MOVED THOSE WHO WROTE THE SCRIPTURES (II Pet. 1:21).

F. JUST AS A DRY WIND CAN WITHER THE BEAUTY OF NATURE, SO THE HOLY SPIRIT CAN WITHER THE SELF-RIGHTEOUS HEART OF MAN BY HIS CONVICTING WORK (Isa. 40:6-7).

- The Spirit of God is a free agent in regeneration, He works how, and when, and where He pleases.

- This grace of the Spirit in regeneration, like the wind, is powerful, irresistible, and there is no withstanding it.

- It throws down Satan’s strongholds, redeems the sinner out of his sin, and gives him a new heart.
V. FIRE IS A TYPE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
A. FIRE IS A SYMBOL OF THE SPIRIT’S PRESENCE (Acts 2:1-4).

1. In the Old Testament, the Lord manifested His presence by fire (Ex. 3:2).

2. He expressed His approval by fire (Lev. 9:23-24).

3. The Lord led and protected His people by a pillar of fire (Ex. 13:21-22).

4. Perhaps all of these ideas are included in Acts 2:3).

B. THE SPIRIT IS SYMBOLIZED BY SEVEN LAMPS OF FIRE (Rev. 4:5).

1. This refers to the the perfect understanding that was given to Christ as the anointed of God (Isa. 11:1-4).

2. The seven horns and the seven eyes of the Lamb represent the Holy Spirit which proceeds from the Father and the Son (Rev. 5:6).

By no means have we exhausted the study of the types of God’s Spirit in the Bible, but hopefully you now have a better understanding of the Holy Spirit as He is portrayed in the Word of God. Amen.

He is just copy/pasting articles from other websites. Just search the title and you will find it: http://christiananswers.net/q-eden/wind ... pirit.html. If he wanted to keep it inconspicuous, he could have at least gotten rid of "Photo copyrighted".

We certainly don't mind if you want to post your thoughts and start a discussion! :D We'd just prefer if they were YOUR thoughts, rather than copied from another Web site.

Man, I go away for a bit and when I come back I see a wall of posts from the same new guy. What's up with that?

Someone gonna tidy up? And what's with the dude only wanting responses in PM? Then ask the question to someone in PM.

Weird.
Everything above this sentence is opinion and worth precisely what was paid for it.
Everything below this sentence is indisputable fact as verified by scientists, philosophers, scholars, clergy, and David Bowie.
