The first Pope from the Americas, the first Jesuit Pope, the first Francis... and this is on the heels of a historic resignation of his predecessor (before Benedict XVI, it had been 600+years since a Pope had resigned. All the other ones died in office). I'm wondering where the Catholic church is headed from here, and if all this "newness" is a sign that the church is changing. For better or worse, though?

Any thoughts? Note that I'm not Catholic, but I do get a kick out of the idea of living through historical events....

Apparently, he's about as conservative in his views as Benedict was. I don't see the Catholic church changing all that much, unless this all happened because of some scandal they're trying to cover up or something.

Whatever the case, it certainly is an interesting turn of events.

I'm just waiting for anti-Catholic rhetoric to start attacking the guy the way they did with Benedict XVI before the man even got through new Pope orientation.

I've already started seeing it. From other Christians, mind you, but the Calvinists were all over the papacy as soon as Benedict retired.

My wife has already found a few conspiracy theorists gong nutso about the supposed evils of the new Pope. Didn't take long for them to emerge....

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have issued a nice press releasewelcoming the new Pope. So that's good to see, at least! After all, even though we may all have different approaches and opinions, we all are brothers and sisters in Jesus Christ.

I admire that in Mormons. They have much more of a tendency to be accepting of other branches of Christianity, in spite of the LDS many times being treated like the black sheep of Christianity. It really warms my cynical atheist-leaning-agnostic heart, and I mean that sincerely. :)
