It's a roguelike, real-time strategy with quite a few RPG elements. It can be complicated, but no more than Torchlight or other real-time RPGs. Fortunately, you can pause the action while selling items, talking with other alien races, or swapping out components (basically) equipment on your ship, although the swap won't be completed until the game is un-paused.
The similarities between it and other RPGs are actually quite surprising. If you're comfortable with inventory management and comparing stats as in fantasy-based RPGs, you'll probably feel right at home here. If you prefer more of the story elements of RPGs and get all glossy-eyed when it comes to the numbers, then you may not be to keen on this game.
