So he's still in the hospital, and unfortunately he's not really getting better. I could try to explain what's going on, but I think it's best summarized by what my mom just told me: He was asked if he wants to be resuscitated if his heart stops, and they are preparing for palliative care.

I don't really know how to process all this. I'm flying out on Friday to go and see him. I'm not sure how to handle all this.

Nobody ever is, bro. I know the sound of those words too, and the feeling of stunned is going to be your new status quo until something changes one way or the other.

Update. They're moving him to hospice at home tonight. I'm taking a red eye out tonight to go see him. My mom isn't sure how long he's going to last...

At around 10:40 PM on Tuesday, January 24 my father passed away at the age of 53. The cancer in his kidney was removed, but there was cancer elsewhere in his body that had spread to his bone marrow. His platelets dropped, and eventually his blood pressure got so low that he just stopped breathing.

Both of his sisters and his parents flew out to see him, and we are all in various degrees of shock. He was unconscious when I got home on Tuesday morning, but apparently he could still hear me. I tried to go to sleep that night, but was woken because the hospice nurse said he was near the end. With all four of his sons and his wife by his bedside, he simply stopped breathing and died peacefully. We've been in various stages of mourning all day, and tomorrow I'm going to go to another town to be with some friends to try and help me cope with the loss.

Memorial service is on Tuesday. I'm not returning to Portland until Thursday, and will go back to work on Friday.

Prayers for us are still appreciated.
