Re: People Leaving the LDS Over New Baptism Rules

I mean, we all have thousands of different individual beliefs, right? Having set, relatively inflexible beliefs without much wiggle room historically sets up a split, IMO. It's like building a bridge without compensations for the expansion/contraction of the structure or lateral shifting. It's pret...

Re: People Leaving the LDS Over New Baptism Rules

The alternative, having literally thousands of small groups with unique doctrines, is more problematic IMHO. I mean, we all have thousands of different individual beliefs, right? Having set, relatively inflexible beliefs without much wiggle room historically sets up a split, IMO. It's like building...

Re: People Leaving the LDS Over New Baptism Rules

I don't think that's such a leap. We'll have to to just... agree to disagree on that one :P It's pretty big. If the source of Scriptural understanding is people who are prompted by the Holy Spirit, it makes perfect sense that the community should look to those who have those attributes for guidance...

Re: People Leaving the LDS Over New Baptism Rules

I think it carries that meaning as well, sure. That teaches us a similar lesson though. It's saying that these things come through "holy men of God as they were moved by the Holy Ghost." Not individual laypersons. There's got to be a coherent leadership to guide us for obvious reasons: Individuals ...

Re: People Leaving the LDS Over New Baptism Rules

I see it from the other perspective. 2 Peter 19 - 21 says We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture...

Re: People Leaving the LDS Over New Baptism Rules

I can't do denominations anymore. Can't make a move without word from a grand poobah? Nah.

This isn't a dig at the LDS church. It's at church hierarchy in general. But I'm a rebellious Christian :P

Re: People Leaving the LDS Over New Baptism Rules

Scriptural interpretation is always a matter of opinion at some level

Re: Why Aren’t More Intellectuals Believers?

I'd respond to this by saying religion has never been more needed than it is now.
I would say that more accurately. Christ is needed now as much as he's ever been, and the need for religion and Pharisaical doctrine is needed as little now as it ever was.

Re: People Leaving the LDS Over New Baptism Rules

At what point does not conforming to mainstream church doctrine become conforming to mainstream culture?

Re: Why Aren’t More Intellectuals Believers?

Please do not join the discussion if it's on this level, ok? I am not telling you that you act stupid, because you are a christian.
"You can't be religious and intelligent, lol

btw don't call my reasoning dumb, it's immature for you to do that ok"

Re: Five Bible Verses You Need to Stop Misusing

Here's my thing with this verse--and usually I'm not for superficial readings or disregard for historical context. Deep reading with historical context: Historically speaking, this verse is talking about God's specific plan for the Jews during and after their exile to Babylon. This is an illustratio...

Re: Five Bible Verses You Need to Stop Misusing

I dunno about some of them. People always do the "LOL JER29:11 IS ABOUT JOOZ, DUMDUM" but I'm also of the mindset that a lot of the OT is, in part, supposed to be a very long and complex story about the nature of God and his relationship with his people.

Re: What Happens When the 'Moral Majority' Becomes a Minority?

I get that you guys' perspective is that mountains are being made of molehills. Problem is you guys have separated yourselves from your Christianity so at this point you're kinda on the outside looking in. That's your choice, but you're looking at it from a different perspective now. You don't see ...

Leaving for a while.

Long story short, I'm getting married, honeymooning, beginning my fifth semester of grad school, organizing apartment stuff, and much more, especially considering my gradual drift from the fold of conservative Christianity. It's been a long time coming... It's been quite a while since I distanced my...

Re: What is God's Plan for My Life?

Why do we have free will if God's plan is so specific? I'm just going to venture out there and ask "Is it really that specific?" and propose "maybe it isn't." I don't disagree with a lot of what's said here but the "every moment, every interaction orchestrated by God Himself" train of thought never...
