Re: Rethinking the doctrine of hell

Hey RoosterOnAStick, . . . if someone wants something that is not healthy or even more destructive than their current state, how would it be loving to allow them that? Suicide is a good example of this. Shall we allow people to end their suffering by killing themselves or should we try to intervene?...

Re: Rethinking the doctrine of hell

Hey RoosterOnAStick, I once held a view similar to yours, although my rationale was not God’s love. I've had long discussions with people who emphasize God's love but conclude that hell will eventually be empty, that universalism is true. But, what about God's justice and respect for our autonomy? P...

Re: Rethinking the doctrine of hell

Djents, you seem to be asking from my POV why did Paul say "eternal destruction" as opposed to simply "final destruction" or "destruction". This is how I think about it. I think God's creative power is so magnificent that he could destroy someone then raise them up in the twinkle of an eye. The poin...

Daniel, I am also in Texas and have lived in Oklahoma for 5 years. I joined to play minecraft but haven't played in a few years because I've been so busy at work and with life. But, I hang around because I love my friends here and the engaging topics. Welcome, friend! 8)

Re: OSAS?

. . . used in direct comparison to "perishing" because we are still being saved, and are saved. But the main thing in hand that I am referring to, is turning away from God, it forfeits their future and present salvation. Thanks for pointing out that scripture, Djents. When I say this is a misnomer ...

Re: Rethinking the doctrine of hell

Hey Djents To say that "Paul made no mention of hell" is an argument from silence. . . and is a logical fallacy. This is not true, arguments from silence can be valid or invalid. We use them all the time in medicine and forensic science for example. The only question is, if hell were a literal place...

Re: OSAS?

That's an interesting story ArcticFox. It reminds me of how much God values humility. We always hear that God is love, but the more I think about what God did through Jesus, the great humility of being Creator and taking human form to be beaten, mocked, and crucified, points to the reality that God ...

Re: Rethinking the doctrine of hell

Djents, My friend, you seem well-informed about scripture, but I think you would agree that we must be careful about interpretation and not let a single verse interpret the remainder of scripture on the subject especially when it comes straight out of the intense and strange apocalyptic imagery of R...

Re: Koine greek

Djents, You can learn New Testament Greek! Start with the alphabet and pronunciation especially the special cases (i.e., sigma at the end of a word looks different than in the middle). Learn about dipthongs. Build up a vocabulary of similar words to English. Then memorize pronouns. Then, buy an inte...

Re: Calvinism: Is it biblical?

I don't have time to read all of the good discussion here unfortunately, but I wanted to make a comment briefly. I think the biggest problem lies in the meaning of predestined and/or elect. What could this mean if some kind of freedom exists? Just cutting to the chase here I think the best way to vi...

Re: OSAS?

Blaspheming the Spirit is not forgivable. In other words, if you have the Spirit and you reject how it compels you, you have rejected the Creator of life and salvation itself. Once you have the Spirit this may be extremely difficult, you have to want to adopt the spirit of the world, but it's possib...

Re: Rethinking the doctrine of hell

@Djents Thanks for your comment. I have a Greek interlinear. :D The fact that there are verses which mention eternal fire do not necessarily suggest eternal torment , rather that the possibility of the material reassembling into life, a process also known as resurrection, in the new creation are zil...

Re: Outgrouping

Brilliantly written, AA! Insightful, and the comedic interjections were priceless, I found myself nodding then smiling then nodding some more. The out-grouping phenomenon has caused so much harm, and your suggestions especially actively seeking to know them (number 3) are great. I remember my early ...

Re: Snobs and Congregations: A Rant

ArcticFox, sorry, sounds like a frustrating situation, especially since there are so many factors that are pretty well out of control. I definitely agree with you that scripture has many many interpretations. That does make things harder. I've heard of Catholics call their interpretational authority...
