Thank you Rising Star Games for sending us this game to review!

Even though Kromaia did not meet its 2013 indiegogo fundraising goal, it still made it to Steam with the help of Rising Star Games.  It offers gamers a lot of speed, action, and mod-ability.   Many popular shooter games like Rez and Star Fox limit your ability to explore, but Kromaia lets you move, interact with, and destroy the environment freely.

Kromaia is a 3D freestyle shooter that has many challenging enemies and bosses that swarm and adapt to your play style.  The goal in the single-player story mode is to take revenge on and dethrone the four gods that are standing in your way.  At first you'll be limited to only one ship and area (node) to reclaim.  After that node is conquered, more ships (called armors) and areas will become available to you.

Strong Points: Fun arcade space shooter with enemies that adapt to your play style
Weak Points: Only a few levels that have to be beaten multiple times
Moral Warnings: Aircraft violence; guardian gods

Each armor offers different weapon types, fire power, rate of fire and ease of use.  The blue armor has a sword like melee weapon while the others fire projectiles.  Every ship is equipped with a compass and four shield units to protect it.  Each shield unit can take up to two hits before it gets depleted.

Defeated enemies will occasionally drop power-ups like shield replenishments and advanced boosts.  As you earn more points destroying enemies, your ship will level up.  I didn't notice any benefits to leveling up.

In each level you'll have to dodge asteroids and incoming attacks from ships while you collect jump gate components to release the boss or guardian god.  They may look intimidating but they have weak points waiting to be exploited.  Don't let your guard down or underestimate them though.  Your ultimate goal is to unlock the Kyllene Wheel, and to do that you must defeat each level using every ship type.   While repetitive, each ship fires and reacts differently to the enemies and bosses within.

Game Score - 78%
Gameplay - 15/20

Sound - 7/10
Stability - 5/5
Controls - 5/5

Morality Score - 90%

Occult/Supernatural - 10/10
Cultural/Moral/Ethical - 8/10

There are four difficulty levels (Easy, Medium, Hard, Ultimate) that determine the save point frequency.  I'll admit that I played on easy since I'm not used to this style of game.  I found Easy to be plenty challenging for my tastes.

There's a score attack mode if you want some quick pick up and play action.  While I have not experimented with it, Kromaia is very mod friendly and lets you change many game variables by editing XML files.

The visuals are futuristic and unique looking.  There are many types of enemy ships and worms out to get you.  The atmosphere and electronica music reminded me a little bit of the Tron movies and games. The synthesized background music is fitting and sets the mood nicely.

While Kromaia is not rated by the ESRB, it's pretty family friendly if you can look past the multiple gods and quest for revenge against them.  For gamers who like space shooters and don't mind a little repetitiveness, keep an eye out for Kromaia.

About Us:

Christ Centered Gamer looks at video games from two view points. We analyze games on a secular level which will break down a game based on its graphics, sound, stability and overall gaming experience. If you’re concerned about the family friendliness of a game, we have a separate moral score which looks at violence, language, sexual content, occult references and other ethical issues.
