Thank you Circle Entertainment for sending us this game to review!

Quell Memento is the second Quell game to come to the 3DS platform.  Unlike the mobile versions, there is no built-in hint system or in-app purchases.  Fortunately, Youtube was able to come to my rescue when I got stuck on some of the puzzles.

There are over one hundred and sixty new puzzles in this game.  They are broken down into ten chapters with four sections each containing four puzzles within.  The puzzles within the section can be played in any order but the chapters and sections become unblocked as the previous puzzles are completed.

Each puzzle has a hidden gem and a perfect number of moves to solve it.  Even if you solve every puzzle, there is plenty of re-playability in beating the number of moves it took and locating all of those pesky jewels.

Quell Memento
Highlights:

Strong Points: Lots of challenging puzzles; new gameplay mechanics;  soothing music
Weak Points: More expensive than mobile versions
Moral Warnings: Defenseless droplets of water can be poisoned or eradicated by spikes and thorns

If you are new to the series, the premise is simple.  You have to move the droplet(s) of water through various obstacles to collect all of the pearls.  Some of the obstacles include spikes, thorns,  and poisonous droplets that will destroy your droplet upon impact.  There are some gates that will let you pass through once and then close; you must plan every move before you make it.  If you make a mistake, you cannot undo your last move; your only option is to restart the level.

Not only does Quell Memento offer a backstory (and voice acting!), they have added new types of puzzles.  There are light bulb and ray of light based puzzles.  In the light bulb puzzles you have to illuminate all of the light bulbs to solve it.  There is often a switch to turn the bulbs on or off at strategic times.  The other new puzzle type involves lining up rays of light to illuminate the proper color gem stone.

There are various achievements including some funny ones like “Hadron Collider” for emitting a beam at least twenty tiles long.  Since this is a single-player game, no one else will see these accomplishments unless you hand them your 3DS.

Even though this game is on the 3DS, it does not utilize the 3D effects in any way.   The top screen will show your completion status of the current section.  The bottom screen displays the puzzle and you can use the stylus, d-pad, or circle pad to navigate your droplet(s).

The flute combined with violin  and piano music is very serene and makes this a soothing gaming experience no matter how tricky the puzzles are. The voice acted story is about  an old man cleaning out his attic and the memories it brings back to him.  Some are bittersweet.

Quell Memento is a fun and family friendly puzzle game that is both relaxing and challenging.  With over 150 levels, it‘s worth the $3.99 on Nintendo’s eShop.  If you have a Android or iOS device  you can get it on Google Play for $.99 and iTunes sells it for $2.99.

About Us:

Christ Centered Gamer looks at video games from two view points. We analyze games on a secular level which will break down a game based on its graphics, sound, stability and overall gaming experience. If you’re concerned about the family friendliness of a game, we have a separate moral score which looks at violence, language, sexual content, occult references and other ethical issues.
